Pawrent notices strange Y-shaped reflection in cat's eyes, vets disagree on answer so she searches within the online cat community for help: 'You can never be too careful when it comes to eyes'

Some call it a meowdical mystery, but we know it as the awakening of a mangekyo sharingan.

If you don't get that reference, don't sweat it - it's for all of our purrfectly nerdy anime fans out there. It's from an anime called Naruto, and it's great. If you are into ninjas, a beautifully-written story, and ameowzing fight scenes, go check it out. Or don't, it's your life (but seriously, you're missing out).

Anyway, back to this meowsterious kitty! Their pawrent noticed a strange Y-shaped reflection in their purrecious feline's eyes, and asked the online cat community for help. Multiple vets (or so they say, you can't really trust anyone on the internet 100%) have given two different conclusions: it's either a completely normal thing that happens, or it's a form of cataracts. Either way, we still think that they should go and get them checked out by a purrfessional in person. 

Although we consider ourselves cat expurrts, not even we know everything about cats. This is the first time we've ever seen something like this, too! Cats never fail to surprise us. Just when you think you've seen everything there is to see about cats, they waltz on in with some whiskerful mystery that you never thought was pawssible.     soontobedvm92 Vet here. You are seeing a "Y suture" of the eye. In some cats this can be prominent and thus completely normal. There are cases of Y suture cataracts, but this is really rare. Get a vet appointment just in case, but don't be overly concerned!

  • For reference, this is a picture of the mangekyo sharingan. It only awakens in a specific clan, the Uchiha clan, who are born with a unique ninja technique called “the sharingan” that literally changes their eyes. The sharingan allows them to copy their opponent's techniques, enhanced speed and reaction time, and the ability to use sharingan-specific “genjutsu” (a form of hypnosis). It's pretty cool. The mangekyo sharingan is much stronger and allows them to use even more techniques.

  • “You can never be too careful when it comes to eyes” - one commenter wrote, and they're purrfectly right. Eyes are a very sensitive organ, and you wouldn't want something to get worse, as a lot of eye problems are irreversible.

  • We're surprised another person has seen this before, because in all of our years being cat owners and looking at cats on the internet, we've never seen a cat with this issue before. Have you? It seems very unique.
